Origins

The exact origins are a bit fuzzy, but most historians believe that the game was first invented in 1655 by Blaise Pascal. The famous French mathematician was working on his quest to create a perpetual motion machine when he stumbled upon the idea for roulette.

Some people claim that the game evolved from older games like portique, hoca, bassette, and even-odd. Other historians point to an alleged ancestor in Italy called Biribi. The Blanc brothers later added a single-zero variant of the game to make it more profitable, and this became the standard version used today in Europe. In America, the double-zero wheel was retained.
